An abortion can be performed in Brazil only if the pregnancy is a case of rape, is life-threatening to the pregnant woman, or if the baby is anencephalic, in which case, the Brazilian government will provide an abortion free of charge. The punishment for receiving an illegal abortion in 1 to 3 years of imprisonment, and the punishment for providing one is 1 to 4, with this sentence increasing up to double if the pregnant person is harmed by the procedure.
