Abortion in Algeria is strictly illegal in all cases besides risk to the pregnant person's life or health. Terminating a pregnancy illegal leads to severe punishments including fines and imprisonment for both the pregnant person and the medical provider. Due to these restrictions, many women who are unable to carry the fetus to term turn to secret abortion clinics, which are both costly and unsanitary.
