Abortion in Angola is not legal on request, but it is permitted in cases of evident risk to the pregnant person's life/health and severe fetal impairment. If the pregnancy is a result of rape, there is a gestational limit of 16 weeks, and the crime has to be verified in court. However, due to social stigma and a lack of licensed facilities capable of providing medical abortion, many women are forced to choose clandestine and unsafe procedures instead. Both performing and obtaining an illegal abortion result in a prison sentence of up to 5 years.
