In Bolivia, abortion is only legal to preserve the pregnant person's health, including mental health, as well as for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. However, to receive an abortion, judicial permission must be secured, taking so much time that most women resort to illegal and unsafe abortions instead. In 2011, almost all abortions were illegal, and over half of the women who received them required medical care afterwards. It is unclear if the situation has improved, and this practice is a key factor in the high maternal mortality rates of Bolivia.
