In Botswana, abortions are only legal in specific circumstances and must be performed in a government hospital with the approval of two physicians, all within the first 16 weeks of pregnancy. The cases in which abortion is legal include endangerment of the pregnant person's physical or mental health, pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, and evidenced fetal defects. Even though women in Botswana have great access to safe abortion compared to other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, the strict laws mean that most still resort to illegal and unsafe practices, resulting in high maternal mortality.
